The Taishun Mine Ice City Tourist Resort, located in Xidong village, Shiyang town, Taishun county, Wenzhou, is leading the way in all-for-one tourism and rural revitalization in Wenzhou.
The tourist resort was invested in by Zhang Yunshu and his brother Zhang Yundang, Wenzhou natives who own ceramic design and production businesses in Guangdong province.
Zhang Yunshu said that in the 1980s local people in his hometown relied on mining to survive. Though the mine was shut down and abandoned in 2009, the legacy of mining lives on there.
In 2019, with the support of the local government of Taishun county, Zhang decided to invest in a tourism project to help people in his hometown shake off poverty.
With a total of 1.4 billion yuan ($210.12 million) in investment, the tourist resort planed to carry out the ecological restoration of 3.33 hectares of open-pit abandoned mines. Construction started in December 2019.
The first phase of the tourist resort - the scenic area of the mines - opened on Jan 25, allowing visitors to go boating and drive off-road karts in the original mine.
So far, the scenic spot has received a total of 42,000 tourists amid the COVID-19 epidemic.
The ice city scenic area, built on the slag heaps of the mines and some agricultural land, will include an ice and snow castle, a flower field, an outdoor maze and an agricultural product processing experience area. Construction is expected to finish by the end of 2025.
In addition, a tea cultural park and planting and sightseeing park of Premna microphylla will be built by the end of 2030.
