Wenzhou plans to spend 1.7 billion yuan ($254.67 million) building and renovating 3,500 5G towers and open 4,000 5G base stations in 2022, according to construction plans released by the local government recently.
With the development of new infrastructure, 5G has been applied to a wide range of sectors including manufacturing, transportation, medical care, education, culture and tourism.
In the intelligent manufacturing sector, leading enterprises such as Chint Electric, Huafeng Spandex, and Ruiming Group have deployed new 5G networks with high performance, high flexibility and high security to upgrade and transform enterprises' intranet, and apply typical 5G application scenarios such as workshop data collection, intelligent warehousing, and visual inspection.
In addition, a smart agriculture project featuring 5G communication, internet of things and satellite navigation technology has been carried out in Cao town, Rui'an, Wenzhou. New intelligent agricultural machines such as drones and field operation robots are used to make farming more efficient. A total of 10 hospitals in Wenzhou have made connections with an online platform to provide medical services to locals.
Wenzhou was selected as a national pilot city for 5G development in 2019. As of April, the city had built 14,897 5G base stations, covering 92.18 percent of the city's administrative villages. High-quality 5G networks have covered 184 industrial parks at all levels in the city.
By 2023, the city will open 20,000 5G base stations, and a total of 30,000 5G base stations will also be built from 2020 to 2024, according to officials.
