Wenzhou foreign trade worth $17b in Jan-May period

Wenzhou customs announced on June 20 that from January to May this year, the value of the city's imports and exports climbed 29.9 percent year on year to 113.91 billion yuan ($17.02 billion). Exports were up 34.1 percent to 95.61 billion yuan, while imports were up 11.8 percent to 18.3 billion yuan.

Mechanical and electrical products, labor-intensive products, and high-tech products saw the highest year-on-year growth of 31.3 percent, 39.6 percent, and 16.4 percent, respectively, reaching 49.53 billion yuan, 32.45 billion yuan, and 3.27 billion yuan.

Imports of ferroalloy, unwrought copper and copper materials, as well as liquefied petroleum gas, reached 6.94 billion yuan, 2.6 billion yuan and 890 million yuan, up 2.2 percent, 30 percent, and 41.1 percent, respectively.

ASEAN, EU and the United States were Wenzhou's three major trade partners, with the value of imports and exports with these regions reaching 31.45 billion yuan, 17.8 billion yuan, and 15.29 billion yuan, growing up 54.7 percent, 21.7 percent, and 42.9 percent, respectively.

Private enterprises were still the major driver of Wenzhou's economic growth, as statistics show that in the first five months of 2022, private enterprises' imports and exports were up 30.4 percent to 107.69 billion yuan, accounting for 94.5 percent of the city's total. Meanwhile, the value of imports and exports of foreign enterprises and State-owned enterprises was 3.95 billion yuan and 2.27 billion yuan, up 18.5 percent and 30.4 percent, respectively.
