Dongtou district in Wenzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, kicked off a series of romantic activities to celebrate the Qixi Festival, or Chinese Valentine's Day, on Aug 4, local media outlets reported.
Wearing hanfu, a traditional Chinese costume, local residents celebrated the day by following a wide range of customs passed down from ancient times, such as playing cuju, an ancient sport similar to football, reciting romantic poems, doing Qixi-related needlework, and wearing exquisite makeup.
The day also marks children's day for Dongtou residents, as teenagers that have just turned 16 held a coming-of-age ceremony to mark their special day. This custom has been passed down in Dongtou for over 300 years.
Alisher and Akmal, two foreign anchors of the Wenzhou Overseas Media Center, also joined locals in the Qixi celebrations that day.
