The online platform of Global Migration to 2D, an initiative proposed by GS1 to lead industry sectors around the world through the transition from 1D barcodes to 2D barcodes by 2027, was recently launched in Cangnan county, Wenzhou, East China's Zhejiang province.

This May, Zhejiang began working with GS1 in marking its status as the first GM2D demonstration area in the world, evolving retail barcodes to respond to new business and consumer needs.

The GM2D online platform has realized data sharing with more than 130 digital applications, developed and integrated more than 50 functions, collected 176 products in 31 categories, and activated 51,080 market entities in Zhejiang.

According to GS1, 1D barcodes will continue to support the complexity of modern, global businesses, simplifying numerous supply chain processes where data flows quickly, efficiently and securely in a wide range of sectors.

Printing 2D barcodes on millions of products will bring numerous benefits to consumers, businesses and regulators, including giving consumers access to an unprecedented amount of information about products and facilitating efficient factory inspection and supervision of sampling results and qualification and disinfection certificates.
