Thirteen handicrafts created by intangible cultural heritage experts in Yongjia county, Wenzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, will soon go on exhibition tours in the United States.
The works, which include wood carvings, bamboo carvings, Ou Sculpture, and crochet embroidery, were donated by 12 respected artists to the local government.
"My wood carving work Xie Lingyun, named after the Yongjia native who was also China's first nature poet, known for his poems describing scenic landscapes, was made from ebony to showcase his integrity," said master Wang Qingsheng at the donation ceremony on Nov 28.
After being displayed at the county's administrative service center for two days, the works will go on an exhibition tour in the United States – starting at the first Ouyue Cultural Festival in Queens, New York, then going to the Miami-Dade County Public School in Florida and the 39th Asia Art Festival, and then finally going to the UN headquarters in New York.
"I feel honored to have my work seen by fellow citizens living overseas so that they can appreciate the beauty of traditional art," said Li Gangping, an Ou Sculpture practitioner.
Having the largest number of natives living overseas of any city in China, Yongjia in recently years has seen its people spreading over 106 countries and regions. The county is also home to 250 intangible cultural heritage items.
