The 2023 Spring Festival Opera Gala, a cultural show for family reunions, was aired via China Central Radio and Television at 8pm on Jan 22, the first day of the Chinese New Year.
The show featured more than 30 opera genres, over 100 professional opera performers and rising stars from across the country in a total of 14 creative performances
It was pre-recorded in Wenzhou in East China's Zhejiang province, on Dec 10, 2022. Wenzhou is the birthplace of Southern Opera, the oldest mature form of opera in Chinese history. It was the first time since its inception 33 years ago that the gala moved its filming outdoors.
The main stage was located at Jiushan Shuhui, a local book club originating from the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), which preserves the earliest existing complete opera script in China, Top Scholar Zhang Xie.
The 360-degree panoramic stage was encircled by natural landscapes, offering audiences a digital ode to traditional art. The 12 opera stages, featuring a classic architectural style from the Song Dynasty (960-1279), fostered a "City of Chinese operas" ambience.
