On Jan 30, several earth-laden engineering trucks entered the construction site of the Linfu Industrial Zone in Yongjia county, marking the beginning of the construction of BYD's new energy battery production base in Wenzhou.

On Nov 23 last year, the Yongjia county government and auto giant BYD held an online signing ceremony. Two months later, on Jan 12, Wenzhou Fredi Battery Co, a subsidiary of BYD, bid 159 million yuan ($23.58 million) for a 296-mu (19.73 hectares) plot of land.

The plant is expected to produce 20 GWh of new energy batteries annually, and the first production line is expected to be put into operation next year.

The BYD project was one of the 140 projects selected by the Wenzhou government to start construction this year.

The city announced that it will work on 389 key projects this year, which will receive investments totaling 120 billion yuan. The projects will mainly focus on fields such as advanced manufacturing, sci-tech innovation, clean energy, agriculture and rural affairs, culture and tourism integration, infrastructure, and people's well-being.
