Wenzhou, a city in East China's Zhejiang province, has launched a project to strengthen its reputation as the "hometown of mathematicians", local media reported.
At a forum on the preservation of math culture at Wenzhou University on March 12, a ceremony was launched to mark the start of the project, while a memorial hall for well-known mathematicians Su Buqing and Gu Chaohao opened to the public for free.
According to a plan for the construction of "Wenzhou Mathematicians' Home", the city will build a strong mathematical research platform, strengthen mathematics education, and create a center for math talent.
Specifically, the city will set up Su Buqing School and Higher Institution for Mathematics Studies at Wenzhou University, establish a primary-and-secondary-school mathematics teaching and research center, strengthen the workforce of mathematics teachers, draw a map of Wenzhou-born mathematicians worldwide, and build more math-related parks.
Over the past century, Wenzhou has witnessed the emergence of numerous mathematical talents and a group of famous math scholars, including over 200 mathematicians such as Jiang Lifu, Su Buqing and Gu Chaohao. The cultural genes of the Wenzhou mathematician community have also injected continuous vitality into the subsequent cultivation of math talent.
Since the launch of the "Cradle of Mathematicians" project in 2002, students from Wenzhou have won six gold medals and one silver medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad. Since 2017, there have been 211 students from Wenzhou who have participated in the National Mathematical League and won the first-place prize in the competition area.
