The Nanji Archipelago, located in Wenzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, has been included in the second batch of 12 beautiful bays in China released by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment on Aug 28.
According to the ministry, a beautiful bay is defined as a bay that consistently maintains a picturesque marine environment and provides high-quality ecological products to meet the growing demand for a better quality of life.
The Nanji Archipelago, located in the eastern waters of Wenzhou's Pingyang county, comprises 52 islands, spanning a total area of 200 square kilometers. Nanji Island, the largest island in the archipelago, covers an area of 7.64 sq km.
The archipelago has earned prestigious titles such as being recognized as one of the 10 most beautiful islands in China. Its abundant ecological resources have attracted global attention since the 1990s, resulting in its designation as a national-level marine nature reserve and its inclusion in UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme. This year, it also made the list of Wetlands of International Importance.
