The 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou is set to conclude at 8:00 pm on Oct 8. Ahead of the event, Sha Xiaolan, the director of the ceremony, unveiled some exciting highlights.

During the opening ceremony on Sept 23, over 100 million "digital torchbearers" came together as a giant projected into the arena to ignite the main torch tower. This groundbreaking technological display marked a first in Asian Games history and a pioneering moment in international sports events.

In a highly-anticipated return, the digital torchbearer giant will once again take the stage during the closing ceremony, making a symbolic journey into the distance when the torch tower darkens.

The "digital torchbearer" symbolizes the enduring spirit of the Asian Games. Adding to this spirit, attendees and viewers worldwide will have the opportunity to receive a special keepsake –  "the starlight digital commemorative medal for the Asian Games". This medal represents the Games' everlasting impact and can be obtained by searching for "Asian Games" on Alipay after the ceremony.

Sha emphasized that this narrative tells a story of an inclusive and open China, the unity of Asia, and the unwavering spirit of sportsmanship shows.

The "digital torchbearer" initiative, a collaboration between the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou Organizing Committee and Alipay, made history by breaking the world record as the largest online sports promotion event ever and has received praise from Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, who lauded the opening ceremony as a perfect blend of digital innovation and cultural excellence.
