Smart Green Wave, an application developed by Longwan district, Wenzhou in Zhejiang province, was highlighted at the second Global Digital Trade Expo in November as an exemplary public data authorization and operation practice.

A green wave is created when several consecutive traffic lights are coordinated in such a way that vehicles can cross the intersections unhindered at a certain speed. With a green wave, several neighboring traffic lights on a road are therefore switched so that vehicles can pass unhindered.

According to staff from the big data management center of Longwan district, traditional green wave systems rely heavily on manual research and have relatively inflexible implementation plans. As a result, they struggle to adapt to sudden increases in traffic flow during peak hours, major events or traffic accidents.

The smart green wave application integrates real-time location information of public buses and basic information provided by online car-hailing services with other urban transportation-related public data.

By utilizing artificial intelligence, the application can quickly optimize traffic flow based on real-time data, and help improve overall traffic efficiency.
