The recent approval of the Dongtou branch line of the Ningbo-Dongguan Expressway (G1523) by the Zhejiang Provincial Development and Reform Commission signifies a significant milestone for Wenzhou's transportation infrastructure.

This approval is a crucial step towards realizing comprehensive high-speed access across the city, particularly benefiting residents of Dongtou Island, who have long awaited improved transportation options.

Spanning from the Wenzhou Bay New Area (Longwan) to Niyu Island in Dongtou district, the mainline covers 22.18 kilometers, boasting a designed speed of 100 km per hour and will be constructed to four-lane dual carriageway standards. With an estimated investment of 7.89 billion yuan ($1.09 billion), this line is poised to enhance connectivity and foster economic growth in the region.

For Dongtou, which has historically relied solely on the National Highway 330 for external transportation, the Dongtou branch line will alleviate congestion and facilitate the movement of goods and people, addressing historical transportation challenges and supporting the region's development goals. It is estimated that the travel time between Wenzhou Longwan International Airport and Dongtou Island will be shortened by half an hour.

The mainline of the Dongtou branch line will become the longest cross-sea bridge in Wenzhou and the 10th longest in the world.
