Dai Qianqian, a javelin thrower from Wenzhou, has set her sights on the Paris Olympics after clinching a silver medal with a personal best of 63.63 meters at the National Athletics Grand Prix in Hangzhou on April 14.
This event was the most competitive stop in the series, drawing over 1,000 athletes nationwide. During the two-day competition, 65 athletes from Zhejiang province won a total of five gold, three silver, and five bronze medals.
The women’s javelin throw was a highlight of the Grand Prix, with Zhejiang athletes Yan Ziyi and Dai taking both gold and silver with throws of 64.28 meters and 63.63 meters, respectively, each setting personal records.
Yan’s throw met the Paris Olympics entry standard of 64 meters, making her the first in the country to qualify for the event. However, due to age restrictions, she will not compete in the upcoming Olympics. Dai's coach, Zhang Wei, is optimistic about her breaking the 64-meter barrier and securing her spot at the Paris Olympics.
Dai’s athletic prowess was evident from childhood, as she excelled in various sports and consistently participated in school athletics. Her javelin journey began in sixth grade, leading to numerous accolades, including gold at the National Games youth group and a championship at the National Student Sports Meeting. After joining the provincial team in 2018, her performance has improved steadily.
Graduating from Tianjin Normal University last year, Dai is determined to fulfill her Olympic dream. With the unwavering support of her parents and the freedom to pursue her passion, she is ready to push her limits in the upcoming months and hopefully represent her country on the world's biggest sporting stage.
