The 2024 Nanxi Opera Classic Culture Week commenced with a vibrant opening night at the Wenzhou Grand Theater on April 18.
The event celebrated the rich tapestry of Nanxi Opera with performances like the Ouju Opera Zhang Xie Zhuangyuan (translated as "Zhang Xie, the top-scoring scholar for the imperial examination") and the Kunqu Opera The Peony Pavilion.
The gala, divided into thematic segments, showcased a fusion of traditional and contemporary styles, featuring award-winning artists from across China. The highlight was the immersive experience that brought together diverse forms of opera, reflecting the cultural heritage of regions like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong.
The Nanxi Opera Classic Culture Week, which began in 2023, has taken Nanxi Opera on a national tour, fostering cultural exchange and honoring Wenzhou as a cradle of opera in China. The event also serves as a platform for the next generation, with children attending performances, symbolizing the transmission of cultural legacy.
Hu Weilu, a Kunqu Opera performer from Wenzhou, shared her enthusiasm for the event's role in promoting Nanxi Opera to a broader audience.
In the following days, Wenzhou will host a series of performances, including new works supported by the National Arts Fund, ensuring that the city remains a beacon of operatic excellence.
