Recently, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration decided to nominate Wenzhou to participate in the International Wetland City accreditation under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, marking a significant step towards achieving the prestigious recognition.

Wenzhou is renowned for its extensive coastline and unique geographical features. With 223,300 hectares of diverse wetlands, it ranks near the top in Zhejiang province, serving as a paradise for birds and the perfect habitat for shellfish and algae.

The title of International Wetland City represents the pinnacle of a city's achievements in wetland ecological protection and serves as a vital showcase for exceptional environmental stewardship.

Since the initiation of the International Wetland City project in February 2021, Wenzhou has been diligently working towards meeting the associated primary standards, exploring the path towards wetland protection and restoration best suited to its environment.

Wenzhou's natural wetlands cover 136,000 hectares, with a protection rate of 61.09 percent, and the quality and functionality of these ecosystems continue to improve. In 2022, Wenzhou established the first city-level mangrove research center in China and launched the province's first blue carbon trading project. These initiatives have been recognized as national examples of marine ecological protection and restoration.

Wenzhou's wetlands have become crucial stopovers for migratory birds along the East Asia-Australasia Flyway, attracting over 300 species of rare birds. The city's efforts have also led to the successful designation of the Nanji Islands as an internationally important wetland.

Through diverse educational activities and community engagement, Wenzhou aims to build a strong ecological foundation for future generations.
