The first Marco Polo Cup Dragon Boat Invitational in Rome recently concluded to great fanfare. The Prato Qinglong Dragon Boat Team and the Brothers Dragon Boat Team, both composed of Wenzhou people, secured first and second place, respectively, showcasing the prowess of Wenzhou's dragon boat culture.
Held on the artificial lake in southern Rome, the event featured eight overseas Chinese dragon boat teams from cities like Milan, Florence, and Rome. The Brothers Dragon Boat Team, with over 50 Wenzhou members, used Chinese-made dragon boats, highlighting the appeal of "Made in China".
Claudio Schermi, president of the International Dragon Boat Federation, attended the event. During his visit to Wenzhou in March, he noted that dragon boat racing, which originated in China, has become a global sport, fostering connections between China and the world.
Wang Chengyun, vice-chairman of the China Dragon Boat Association, emphasized that dragon boat racing symbolizes the unity, cooperation, and pioneering spirit of the Wenzhou people. Hosting dragon boat events in Italy helps spread Wenzhou's dragon boat culture to Europe and beyond, enhancing cultural exchange and cooperation.
Last year, the Wenzhou Dragon Boat Team debuted in Venice, receiving enthusiastic applause from locals and tourists.
Wenzhou aims to become the "World Dragon Boat City." The city has established dragon boat bases in countries like Italy, Spain, and France, regularly hosting events to promote Chinese culture and strengthen international ties.
