Dinghai district in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, has seen a boom in charity in recent years.
Statistics show that the district's charity federation has raised charity funds of more than 73.59 million yuan ($10.66 million) over the past five years, of which around 63.11 million has been used to help 73,063 people in need.
Companies are the backbone of the district's charity work, along with many other social groups, said a member of the federation, noting that around 36.94 million yuan has been donated by companies.
The federation has also explored other ways of fundraising. It began raising funds online in 2016 and has raised more than 3.2 million yuan to date. In addition, it has set up 35 charity boxes in public places and established 15 small charity funds to encourage people to donate.
With the funds, the federation has carried out many relief efforts, such as donating to Xuanhan county in Sichuan province to help alleviate local poverty, and donating to seriously-ill people from poverty-stricken families to help them get medical care.
In addition to fundraising, the federation has organized 2,510 volunteer activities over the past five years. It has also established a charity supermarket which accepts donations and houses charity bazaars, as well as a special park to promote charity.
