Zhoushan to improve green waste recycling system

Updated : 2019-09-06 (chinadaily.com.cn)

Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province will design and construct six green waste recycling and disposal stations by the end of 2019, according to an improvement plan for the city's waste recycling system issued recently.

Green waste refers mainly to organic waste composed of refuse from gardens and green lands which can be composted.

According to local authorities, Zhoushan's green waste has increased to 20,000 metric tons due to the city's rapid development in recent years.

The most pressing problem is the city's lack of a proper recycling and green waste disposal system, said officials.

The city has been piloting a green waste disposal station for over five years, which can dispose of 1,000 tons of green waste every year, transform them into organic fertilizers and use them to fertilize the city's green lands.

Authorities said that the six stations are capable of solving Zhoushan's green waste disposal problem, improving the recycling system, and fertilizing the barren lands in the island-based city.
