Zhoushan recently won the national title of Demonstration City for Afforestation, according to the National Afforestation Committee.

The green coverage rate in Zhoushan's rural areas has surpassed 40 percent, with the per capita park green land increasing to 14.22 square meters in 2018, higher than the national average (14.1 sq m), said experts.

In recent years, the city has invested nearly 12 billion yuan ($1.70 billion) in afforestation and has built 12 provincial forest towns and 46 provincial forest villages.

According to local authorities, Zhoushan's overall plan to build itself into a forest city was evaluated and approved in May 2016. Since then, the city has been working to construct an ecological environment system.

The city won the national title of forest city in October 2018 and is the only archipelago forest city in China.
