Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province has over the past decade made significant progress in providing public cultural services.

For example, a public cultural service website that is operated by social organizations was launched on April 14, 2014 in Zhoushan. The website is the first of its kind in China.

More than 600 cultural enterprises and nearly 200 social organizations have registered on the website and hosted nearly 3,000 performances that have been watched by over 2 million people both online and offline.

A cultural app was also unveiled this September to better cater to people's cultural demands.

The city has built 307 cultural auditoriums in its fishing villages, where nearly 6,000 performances are staged every year.

Zhoushan is presently home to 450 15-minute cultural life circles, which include five libraries, five cultural centers, six museums, 28 reading rooms and 36 cultural stations.

The city has been maintaining efforts to promote its marine culture during the same period, and has made remarkable achievements in marine archaeology and fishermen paintings.

In addition, Zhoushan's cultural industry has seen steady growth over the last 10 years, and the added value of its cultural industry had grown from 3.24 billion yuan ($450.16 million) in 2016 to 4.99 billion yuan in 2020.

The city has over the last decade launched a series of fitness campaigns involving marathon races, cycling races and yacht races as part of efforts to improve people's health.
