Baisha Island in Putuo district, Zhoushan, Zhejiang province, has implemented a series of measures to build a no-waste island.

Measures include expanding green spaces and improving the living environment, with an array of pocket parks having been established.

Authorities have introduced a digital system for garbage classification featuring digitized coding of permanent residents, installation of smart trash bins with electronic chips, and the use of smart collection vehicles and other intelligent devices.

The island has also established a reward mechanism to encourage residents to participate in garbage sorting, and recyclable and perishable garbage can be converted into points for exchanging goods.

The local government has been leveraging its improved environment to develop tourism and attracted 22 tourism projects with a combined investment of 220 million yuan ($30.23 million) in 2022.

In addition, the island has set up a workshop to develop signature products such as dried fish and cultural and creative products as part of efforts to aid its common prosperity drive.

The workshop has provided jobs to more than 30 residents, and residents' yearly incomes are expected to increase by an average of 25,000 yuan, according to authorities.
