The hairtail aiding the common prosperity drive in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province has been shortlisted as an outstanding practice, the National Intellectual Property Administration announced on Nov 6.
Seven practices in the province made the list.
The Zhoushan Hairtail was designated a national geographical indication product in 2009, and has been integrated with live-streaming e-commerce, leisure tourism, culture and dining, the exhibition economy, and green fisheries over the past three years, serving as a new engine for promoting the vitalization of fishing villages and fostering common prosperity.
The hairtail is currently sold in 21 provinces and cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, and is exported to Japan, South Korea, Australia, Europe, and other places.
According to authorities, the use of geographical indications has brought about an annual output value of about 1.5 billion yuan ($205.66 million) in industries such as tourism, catering, and exhibitions in Zhoushan.
The hairtail alone increases the income of the fishing industry by nearly 150 million yuan annually.
Zhoushan has established the Geographical Indication Protection Committee for seafood products, which is responsible for the management of applications, approvals, and authorizations for the use of geographical indications.
A series of management systems has also been formulated to guide market entities in implementing the organizational management system for intellectual property protection, such as the Intellectual Property Management Measures and the Trademark Usage Management System.
Authorities have also made efforts to strengthen the creation of product standards, inspection and testing, and quality assurance systems, enhance supervision through sampling and routine inspections, and implement the system for product certification and the use of standard marks.
The pass rate for sampling inspections has reached 100 percent, the coverage rate of special marks has reached 95 percent, and the traceability rate has reached 100 percent.
In addition, authorities held a series of events, such as exhibitions, photography contests, and hairtail banquets, to promote the Zhoushan Hairtail brand.
