Zhoushan New Area sees rapid growth in marine economy

Zhoushan New Area, the first state-level new area focusing on the development of the marine economy in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province has made tangible progress in high-quality growth since it was officially launched in 2013.

The GDP in the new area has grown from 75.6 billion yuan ($10.67 billion) in 2012 to 195.13 billion yuan in 2022, with an annual growth rate of 8.6 percent. The proportion of marine production value to GDP has reached 68.5 percent.

With the establishment and operation of a world-leading green petrochemical base and the completion of a number of billion-dollar major projects, the new area has witnessed continuous improvement in its marine technology innovation system and the accelerated development of a talent hub for maritime expertise.

The cargo throughput of Zhoushan Port has increased from 290 million tons in 2012 to 620 million tons in 2022, with an average annual growth rate of 7.9 percent.

Reform and opening-up are deepening in the new area. With efforts to overcome institutional barriers and foster innovative systems, the city has accumulated 269 achievements in distinctive institutional innovation and practical cases, 125 of which are national firsts. Thirty-two innovative practices have been replicated nationwide, leading to the continuous optimization of the business environment and injecting new impetus into high-quality development.
