A major marine ecological restoration project has recently begun in Shengsi county, Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province.

Centered around Gouqi Island and Huaniao Island, the project also covers Shengshan Island, Sijiao Island, and Dahuanglong Island. It focuses on improving the marine environment and enhancing the livability and sustainability of island communities.

The plan includes three key components — restoration of island bays, waste and sewage treatment, and the protection and rehabilitation of native marine plants and animals. Overall, the project will restore 87.75 hectares of ecosystems, rehabilitate 1,669 meters of coastline, and improve 28 hectares of coastal wetlands.

By shifting ecological restoration from short-term interventions to a self-sustaining model, Shengsi seeks to strengthen the islands' natural ability to support both ecology and development. This initiative is expected to offer valuable insights for sustainable island management and integrated land-sea governance nationwide.
