A seminar on the heritage and legacy of lighthouse culture, themed "David Marr Henderson and China's Coastal Lighthouse Archives", was held in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, on Nov 7.

Scholars and cultural experts from Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Zhejiang attended, including Felicity Somers Eve, the great-granddaughter of Scottish engineer David Marr Henderson.

The seminar centered on the donation of a replica of Henderson's design manuscripts for the Huaniao Lighthouse. Discussions covered topics such as Henderson's life in China from 1869 to 1898, the role of British engineers in the construction of modern Chinese lighthouses, and the historical development of lighthouse systems along China's coast.

During the event, Zhejiang Ocean University presented Felicity Somers Eve with a piece of calligraphy, symbolizing their mutual commitment to continued collaboration in studying and preserving lighthouse archives and cultural heritage.

Henderson, a Scottish engineer who joined China's maritime customs service during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911) in 1869, served as chief lighthouse engineer overseeing the design and construction of 34 coastal lighthouses. Among them, the Huaniao Lighthouse, one of the earliest built near the Yangtze River estuary, holds particular historical value. Henderson's original design manuscripts remain a valuable record of China's maritime history and a treasured cultural artifact of Zhoushan.
