Residents in Tuanjie village of Lanxi city, Zhejiang province, were treated to various performances at a gala held at the cultural hall on Feb 23, a day after the Spring Festival holiday.

Performances like singing, dancing and Yueju Opera were staged and won a lot of applause from the audience. "The party is very wonderful. All the performances, close to our own life and performed by people from our village makes us feel warm," said a local villager Jiang Xiaoping.

The highlight of the party was a short sketch about trash sorting. Performed in the local dialect and in a humorous way, the sketch was designed to teach people how to classify garbage and the associated advantages. The performance was well received by the villagers.

Tao Yunquan, creator of the short sketch, is good at singing and dancing. He is the owner of a local restaurant and started to perform on stage last year when Tuanjie village built a cultural hall. He conceived the story through observation of people's lifestyle and the environment in the village. "I hope the play can heighten people's environmental awareness," explained Tao.

Tuanjie village was merged as an administrative village from four smaller villages in early 2016. The authorities constructed a cultural hall in November 2017 to provide a platform for villagers' cultural life.

Efforts were also made to improve public facilities. "We hope to make our village more beautiful and help the villagers live a better life," explained Wu Guoqiang, Party secretary of Tuanjie village.
