Most functions of the household registration system, involving 35 administrative service items, were synchronized between five cities in Zhejiang province, namely Hangzhou, Wenzhou, Huzhou, Jinhua, and Quzhou, on June 1.

"I didn't think I would be able to obtain a Wenzhou hukou (household registration) certificate in Yiwu without having to go to Wenzhou to complete the paperwork," a businessman surnamed Ye told reporters after obtaining his Wenzhou hukou at a police station in Yiwu, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Jinhua on June 1.

For the city of Hangzhou alone, the cross-regional household registration synchronization is expected to benefit about 600,000 people living in the city who are from the cities of Wenzhou, Huzhou, Jinhua, and Quzhou.

As Zhejiang authorities have ramped up efforts to promote the integrated development mode in recent years, personnel exchange between different localities in the province is becoming more and more frequent, driving up demands for hukou transfers. As a result, the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Public Security has been pushing forward with the synchronization of household registration services in different places.

By the end of 2019, all 11 Zhejiang cities at or above prefecture-level have synchronized household registration services within their separate administrative regions. In April, numerous functions of the household registration system were synchronized between the cities of Ningbo, Shaoxing, Zhoushan, Taizhou, and Jiaxing.

"By the end of this year, the synchronization will be achieved between all 11 Zhejiang cities, including Lishui," an official from the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Public Security said.
