Zhao Bian (1008-1084), a poet and calligrapher of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), was a government official renowned for outstanding performance and righteous character. Once he brought only a guqin (seven-stringed Chinese zither) and a crane with him when he took a new position in Chengdu. From then on people started using “a guqin and a crane” to describe clean handed officials. Su Shi, another renowned scholar of the same period, wrote a biography for Zhao after his death.
