Shaoxing in East China's Zhejiang province performed well in a provincial evaluation of public security, local media reported on Jan 28.

In 2020, the city's robbery and theft cases decreased by over 35 percent. The numbers of security accidents and the total death rates both decreased by over 65 percent. In addition, the number of deaths caused by traffic accidents decreased by 31 percent.

In May 2020, the city was included by the Committee of Political and Legal Affairs in the first pilot cities for national modern governance.

Local authorities said the success was encouraged by the mediation experience of Fengqiao town in Zhuji, a county-level city in Shaoxing.

The "Fengqiao experience" was created in the 1960s. The local government improved people's engagement in solving disputes and became a national model in terms of public security.

Since then, most village committees and key enterprises in the town have set up mediation departments to help solve disputes efficiently. The local government has also made efforts to promote legal publicity and education among its residents.
