Great people: Community worker sacrifices holiday to aid in epidemic control
Editor's note: Zhejiang province held its 32nd news conference on epidemic control on March 4, in which seven ordinary people were invited to share their experiences fighting the epidemic. Despite being ordinary everyday people, they have made extraordinary contributions to the province's fight against the disease.
Zhang Jie is a community worker in Sandun town, Xihu district, Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. She gave up her holiday without hesitation after being called back to work on Jan 23, together with more than 400 other community workers in the town.
Zhang’s work includes checking the information of residents, contacting and providing supplies for those under home quarantine, and explaining government policies to residents.
According to Zhang, she manages 319 households, including 30 under home quarantine. Twenty-eight have been released after 14 days of isolation.
Zhang said she was moved by many helpful and warmhearted residents, including a young man surnamed Li who volunteers to help delivery goods, a resident who donated 8,000 face masks to the community, and some others who set up shelves for couriers to place packages to avoid face-to-face contact with residents.
“When the epidemic is over, I’d like to turn off my mobile phone and have a good sleep, take off my mask and drink some milk tea, and enjoy the scenery at West Lake,” said Zhang.
