Yueqing, a county-level city in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, launched a program to renovate 10 rural fields in its northern section to aid in rural revitalization.
"With this program, our village has turned a new leaf. Villagers benefit not only from growing more rice on the renovated fields, but also from the booming tourism brought about by the increasingly beautiful environment," said an official from the Zeji village in Lingdi township, Yueqing.
Lingdi is located in a mountainous area in northern Yueqing. Many terraced fields went unused as local residents moved to cities to work.
Since countryside tourism has experienced a boom in recent years, the local authorities seized the opportunity by developing terraced fields and have so far spent around 580,000 yuan ($81,832) in renovating fields, digging canals, building roads, and improving planting efficiency.
Lingdi township has also established a rice planting cooperative to mass produce rice.
"With a cooperative to guide us, we feel more motivated and have more confidence in the future," said local resident Zhou Nianfu.
In addition to Lingdi township, Huanshan village in Yandang town now attracts many tourists due to its 57-hectare rape flower field, and Xiaoqiu village in Huwu town has become a hot destination for short-haul countryside trips by developing an industrial chain integrating agriculture and sightseeing.
