Jinxiang town in Cangnan county, Wenzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, might be a place that most people aren't familiar with. But its nursery rhymes, which have been passed on orally for generations, perhaps best reflect its culture and history.
In this episode, Chen Mengyao, or Catarina, an overseas Chinese living in Portugal, visits Jinxiang town to explore the stories behind the nursery rhymes.
The Jinxiang dialect, which is unique to the township, is currently spoken by around 30,000 people across China. The dialect is so different from those of surrounding areas that linguists classified the phenomenon as a "dialect island" and discovered that the Jinxiang dialect was formed after centuries of mixing between the Cangnan dialect, Wu dialect and Mandarin Chinese.
