The number of internet users in China has exceeded 1 billion, more than any other country. However, online violence has become an urgent problem in need of resolution, according to many experts.
In recent years, there has been a surge in illegal and criminal acts of online violence, leading to some individuals experiencing "social death" and, in some cases, even more serious consequences.
In response, Luo Weihong, a National People's Congress deputy and vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the Hangzhou Municipal People's Congress, believed that enacting legislation against online violence could be an effective solution to the issue.
"Research conducted by multiple media outlets has shown that over 60 percent of respondents have experienced online violence, and the majority of people believe that relevant legislation should be enacted as soon as possible," said Luo. "Establishing dedicated legislation against online violence is not only a response to societal demands but also an urgent and real necessity."
Online violence often results from the actions of multiple parties. Luo suggested that the obligations and responsibilities of publishers, sharers, and online platforms need to be stipulated one by one.
