A press release announced on Oct 23 that China's first local legislation dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of its renowned figures, enacted by Shaoxing in East China's Zhejiang province, will take effect on Nov 1.

Shaoxing has long been known for its rich legacy of historical figures whose cultural influence continues to shape the city's identity.

The regulation provides a clear legal definition of cultural resources from temporal, spatial, and cultural value perspectives. It covers both tangible and intangible cultural resources related to historical and contemporary celebrities connected to Shaoxing.

The regulation not only clarifies responsibilities among municipal and county governments, departments, and social organizations but also specifies the duties of research institutions.

To put the regulation into practice, Shaoxing will conduct a citywide survey of all types heritage sites, buildings, and intangible resources related to historical figures, expanding protection from individual residences to a broader resource network.

The city also plans to enhance cultural tourism offerings, including educational tours and routes highlighting the history and achievements of notable figures, supported by digital technologies and cultural products.

Furthermore, long-term collaboration with descendants, universities, research institutes, and professional teams will help ensure the continued study, preservation, and sustainable use of cultural resources related to historical figures in Shaoxing.
