Record 433 Zhejiang athletes compete in national para games

Zhejiang province is fielding a record 433 athletes at China's 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games, which opened across Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao on Dec 8.

The games feature 1,876 events across 46 sports, including 131 mass-participation events and 599 Special Olympics events. Zhejiang's full delegation numbers 617, marking its largest participation to date in both athlete count and events entered.

The squad brings together decorated veterans and rising talents: 12 athletes are former Paralympic champions, while 21 are making their national para games debut. The youngest competitor is 12-year-old rower Yang Ziluxuan, and the oldest is 61-year-old wheelchair basketball player Jin Benping.

Wheelchair basketball's three-on-three format made its national games debut this year, and Zhejiang capitalized. On Dec 8, the men's team defeated Shanghai to secure bronze, the best result in the province's history in the event.

As of Dec 8, Zhejiang athletes had completed competitions in soccer for the deaf, cycling, taekwondo, rowing, archery, tennis, and other sports, earning 26 gold, 27 silver, and 32 bronze medals.
