The first supermoon of 2026 appeared over West Lake in Hangzhou on Jan 3, drawing many residents and visitors to the area around Leifeng Pagoda, where they took in the stunning views.

A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the Moon's closest approach to Earth, making it appear larger and brighter than usual.

According to astronomers, 2026 will see two supermoons, with the second expected on Dec 24.
