Quzhou rural art shines overseas through film

The story of Yudong village in Kecheng district, Quzhou, Zhejiang province, known as the "Home of Farmers' Paintings" in China, is presented through film to audiences in the United States.

The second season of the C-Show, organized by the organizing committee of the Chinese American Film Festival and the Chinese American Television Festival, recently premiered in the US.

Among the featured works is When Life Gives You Tangerines, a film from the 2025 "Looking China: Foreign Youth Film Project-Zhejiang Edition", now airing on the American iCity TV and the festivals' official platforms.

Directed by Swiss filmmaker Fabian Keller, the film explores the artistic legacy of three generations of farmer-painters in Yudong village.

The narrative follows Yu Chunliang, who paints vibrant rural scenes after farm work, his daughter Yu Yunmei, who captures domestic life in her art, and his granddaughter He Shengnan, who paints tangerine trees and sunsets on her way home from school. Through their eyes, the film portrays a unique tapestry of Chinese rural artistry.

Yudong in Gouxi township has more than 800 villagers, more than 300 of whom can paint. Their works have won many domestic prestigious awards over the years. 

Since its inception in 2011, the "Looking China: Foreign Youth Film Project", hosted by the Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture at Beijing Normal University, has invited young filmmakers from around the world, many visiting China for the first time, to create short documentaries rooted in local communities.
