A farming technique used in Taizhou's Tiantai county has recently been recognized as an important agricultural cultural heritage item in China.
The technique is used to cultivate combined spicebush root, a renowned Chinese medicinal herb. This recognition adds to Taizhou's growing list of such items, which now includes three.
Tiantai county has gained a reputation as the main production area for combined spicebush root in China, known for its high-quality yield, which ranks among the best in the country. The county has implemented a unique cultivation system that allows the herb to grow under forests. This provides the ideal ecological conditions for its growth and ensures its original quality.
In addition to the combined spicebush root cultivation system, two other agricultural practices from Taizhou were also included in the list - the Xianju waxberry cultivation system and the Huangyan tangerine mound building cultivation system.
Taizhou's Huangyan district is famed as the birthplace of the world-famous wide-skinned citrus fruits. With a rich history of citrus cultivation, the district has developed a unique technique known as "building mound". This traditional cultivation method was created by Huangyan to overcome challenges posed by typhoons and heavy rainfall, ensuring the success of citrus farming.
