The Dragon Boat Festival cultural event kicked off in spectacular fashion, with a thrilling dragon boat race on the Yongning River in the Huangyan district of Taizhou, East China's Zhejiang province, on May 29.

A total of 10 dragon boat teams from across Zhejiang, including from Taizhou itself, gathered to race there — showing both their athletic prowess and the scenic charms of the city.

As the race began, boats sliced through the clear water and the oarsmen, driven by the pounding drumbeats, paddled in perfect rhythm towards the finish line. Spectators packed the riverbanks, cheering the rowers on in full voice, and their faces lit up with excitement and anticipation.

"This is our first time competing in Huangyan and the water in the Yongning River is exceptionally clear — the rowing here is absolutely thrilling," said Jiang Yin, head coach of Jiaxing University's water sports team.

"The city is beautiful, the people are warm and we're definitely looking forward to coming back," Jiang added.

With lights illuminating both sides of the river after the dragon boat race, the celebration continued with dazzling traditional folk performances, including datiehua, striking iron flower, drawing waves of applause and gasps of amazement from the crowd.

The cultural event runs through to June 1 and another dragon boat race will take place on the evening of May 30.

Activities such as a wellness-themed heritage market and a community zongzi-making competition will also be held, offering residents a vibrant blend of tradition and modern festivities.
