Taizhou in East China's Zhejiang province adopted a local regulation on mother-infant facilities that will take effect on Jan 1, 2026. The regulation, confirmed on Nov 26, aims to improve public spaces for breastfeeding and childcare.

The city began building mother-infant rooms several years ago and now has 332 facilities across hospitals, malls, and tourist sites. However, mothers report that nursing in public remains challenging due to the uneven distribution and limited features of these rooms. A citywide digital survey revealed strong public demand for clearer standards and improved accessibility.

The new regulation outlines responsibilities for construction, management, and use, and sets supporting measures and legal requirements for public venues. It addresses practical needs and improves overall public-service planning, fostering a more supportive environment for families.

Local mothers recalled challenges finding suitable rooms while traveling each day, and suggested that clearer regulations could lead to real improvements in workplaces and public facilities.

The city expects the regulation to raise awareness of available facilities, expand coverage, and ensure consistent standards, making daily outings easier for families with infants.
