Renovation work on the Jiaxing section of the Hanzghou-Pinghu-Shanghai waterway was completed and passed its final inspection on Dec 17.

As a result, the channel has grown into a beautiful river-sea intermodal transport corridor, Zhejiang Online reported on Dec 18.

The Hanzghou-Pinghu-Shanghai waterway, a main waterway transport corridor for loading and distributing goods and commodities in Jiaxing and northern Zhejiang, was listed among one of the major projects for Zhejiang's great channel construction.

Officials said it is a key transport corridor for the province to accelerate the development of its river-sea intermodal transport system and plays an important role for Jiaxing to promote its social and economic development.

In an effort to protect and maintain the sustainable development of the waterway, Jiaxing has made great efforts to build it into one of the beautiful demonstration channels in Zhejiang.

With a total mileage of 80.32 kilometers, the renovation work on the Hanzghou-Pinghu-Shanghai waterway was launched in Dec 2017 and it has included various green projects including promoting afforestation, and the general beautification of the environment.

A total of 21 landscape sculptures and culture-themed walls were built along the riverbanks, making the waterway an ecological corridor that has natural and cultural features.

The local government also set up a water transport cultural belt highlighting local characteristics -- especially some ancient historic landmarks such as the Old Granary of Xitang Bridge in Haining -- with the aim of promoting the historical and cultural inheritance of the river.

Officials said that with the optimization and modification of the corridor there, Jiaxing's cargo volumes from combined river-sea transport in the period from January to November grew by 25.96 percent year-on-year to 37.48 million metric tons.

They said the cargo throughput of Jiaxing Port reached 104 million tons during the same period, up 8.75 percent year-on-year, maintaining a strong momentum for the region's waterway transportation.
