A robot was put into service in Xiuzhou, a district in Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province, on Feb 11 to help fight against the novel coronavirus pneumonia, according to local media reports.

The robot, which is capable of making phone calls, was developed by the Zhejiang branch of China Mobile Communications Corp and Qingniu Zhisheng Technology Co Ltd.

The robot explains to call recipients why it is calling and then ask questions about the recipient’s health, including whether they have symptoms such as fever, cough, chest tightness, or fatigue.

The robot will record keywords, such as fever and cough, and generate a word report to assist with NCP prevention and control.

"The robot frees our community workers from having to do daily visits," said a senior official from the Xiuzhou district government, who said that visiting residents one by one to enquire about their health creates a high risk of infection.

Efficiency is the robot's key feature, as it is capable of completing telephone interviews with more than 2,000 residents in just three hours, according to the official.

The robot has already collected information on all key monitoring personnel in Xiuzhou.
