Construction on a monocrystalline silicon project started in Xiuzhou National High-tech Development Zone, Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province on Feb 20, local media reported.

The project is the first to begin construction in Xiuzhou since the Spring Festival ended.

Xi'an-based LONGi Solar Technology Co Ltd invested 5 billion yuan ($711.32 million) to establish a production base in Xiuzhou district, which is expected to generate more than 10 billion yuan in annual production and offer roughly 2,000 jobs.

According to Chen Hong, vice-president of LONGi, the project will put monocrystalline silicon into cheap mass production through the use of advanced technologies, such as high-efficiency batteries and component encapsulation.

Chen said that the company's decision to set up operation in the high-tech zone in Xiuzhou was mostly due to its relatively complete supporting industries and efficient government services.

LONGi is a world-leading solar technology company which supplies more than 30 GW of high-efficiency solar wafers and modules worldwide each year, about a quarter of global market demand.

In recent years, Xiuzhou National High-tech Development Zone has been focusing on developing new energy industry, especially photovoltaic industry, and introducing innovative, intelligent manufacturing, and service-type companies.

At present, in addition to LONGi, construction on projects funded by Canadian Solar and Jeve in Xiuzhou has also begun.
