Mandatory citywide garbage sorting will begin in Jiaxing on Sept 1, Jiaxing Daily reported on Aug 11.

The strict garbage sorting rules require residents to classify their domestic trash into four different categories: recyclables, hazardous waste, perishable waste and other waste. Those who fail to sort their garbage properly could face fines of up to 200 yuan ($29).

Recyclables and hazardous waste should be collected and transported at regular intervals. Residents can also make reservations to have such trash disposed. Perishable waste and other waste should be collected and transported at a fixed time every day.

Supermarkets, farmer's markets, wholesale fruit and vegetable markets and other places that produce a certain quantity of perishable waste can establish treatment facilities for on-the-spot disposal, according to the regulations.
