Luxihui Historic District in Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province is set to be opened to the public in May, local media reported on March 29.

Luxihui, which means "the center of reed mats" in Mandarin, is the earliest business center and commodity distribution center in Jiaxing, which used to be lined with reed mat stores.

Luxihui, along with Xiunong and Xiangyuanbang, form the herringbone structure of the streets and alleys in Jiaxing. These areas reserve many intact traditional residential buildings and special cultural remains relating to the Grand Canal.

As part of the protective development of Luxihui Historic District, there will be a focus on preserving the traditional style, while integrating it with new modern amenities.

Fu Xiaofeng from the project contractor Jiaxing-based Jiacheng Construction Development Co said, "The buildings along the river in Luxihui Historic District are restored according to the traditional Jiangnan residential buildings, creating the feeling of a watertown."

Moreover, a wide variety of flowers are expected to be planted to present different views for visitors in different seasons, including peonies, cherry blossoms, and plum blossoms.

Boutique hotels, personalized catering, and entertainment facilities will be established in the district, according to Fu.

In addition to Luxihui Historic District, Jiaxing houses two other historic districts, Meiwanjie and Moon River.
