Twelve scenic areas in Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province received more than 1.11 million visitors during the five-day May Day holiday, local media reported on May 5.

These scenic areas generated 46.38 million yuan ($7.16 million) in tourism revenue during the holiday, which lasted from May 1 to 5.

Red tourism was the main priority of many tourists as this year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

As the birthplace of the CPC, Nanhu Lake received more than 190,000 visitors during the holiday, 29 percent of whom were born after 1990.

Outdoor activities were popular among local residents, including camping, hiking, canoeing, and paragliding.

Reading was also popular with Jiaxing residents. Statistics from the local cultural, broadcasting, television, and tourism bureau showed that the city's public libraries received 136,808 people and lent 111,179 books during the holiday.

The local cultural and tourism authorities also launched various cultural activities, including exhibitions, theater shows, and cultural performances, to entertain local residents and visitors.
