Jiaxing home to 5.4m permanent residents

Jiaxing in East China's Zhejiang province had a population of more than 5.4 million permanent residents as of Nov 1, 2020, according to the latest national population census.

The permanent residential population in the city increased 19.98 percent from 10 years ago when the figure was over 4.5 million.

An average family household in Jiaxing had 2.49 persons, down 0.39 persons from 2010. The downsizing in family scale was mainly due to the increase of immigrant families and the growing trend of young people moving out after their marriage.

Of the total permanent residents, male residents accounted for 52.1 percent while female residents took up 47.9 percent. The gender ratio of male to female among the city's permanent residents was 108.79:100, 7.14 pecentage points higher than in 2010.

In addition, 652,445, or 12.08 percent, were aged below 14, and 1.04 million, or 19.3 percent, were aged above 60. The latter percentage was 4.3 percentage points higher than in 2010.

Among the city's permanent residents, 823,620 had college degrees or higher qualifications and its illiterate population was reduced from 293,645 in 2010 to 112,056 in 2020.

The top three most populous counties in Jiaxing were sequentially Haining, Tongxiang, and Pinghu, and their combined population made up 51.43 percent of the province's aggregate.

Haining's permanent residential population stood at 1.07 million, accounting for 19.93 percent of the city's total.
