Jiaxing athletes to compete at Tokyo 2020 Paralympics

Two athletes from Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang province will participate in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, which is scheduled to be held from Aug 24 to Sept 5.

The Jiaxing athletes, along with 26 other Zhejiang athletes, have assembled in Beijing and will fly to Tokyo in four groups starting from today.

Wu Limin, born in 1989, is the first athlete from Zhejiang to play football at the Paralympics and Wu will participate in the Games as an able-bodied athlete.

According to the competition rules, able-bodied athletes can serve as goalkeepers in the football competition for persons with visual impairments.

In 2010, Wu was selected by Zhejiang Disabled Persons' Federation as the goalkeeper of the Zhejiang football team and in 2019, he joined the national team to prepare for the Tokyo Paralympics.

Another athlete Zhang Tianxin, born in 1998, will compete in archery. In 2018, Zhang won second place in the Men's Individual Compound W1 and first place in the Men's Team Compound W1 at the National Archery Championships for Persons with Disabilities in Hangzhou.

In 2019, he won a gold medal in the Mixed Team Compound W1 and silver medal in the Team Compound W1 at the World Archery Championships in the Netherlands, as well as won another gold medal in the Men's Individual Compound W1 at the third Asian Archery Championships in Thailand.

China will send a delegation of 437 athletes, coaches, and support staff to the Tokyo Paralympic Games. The 251 athletes, including 132 women, have an average age of 27.5 and are from eight of China's 56 ethnic groups.
