Jiaxing successful in preparing for Typhoon Chanthu

Jiaxing in East China's Zhejiang province has been fully prepared for the 14th typhoon of the year Chanthu, with no major hazards, disasters, and casualties having been reported in the city, local media reported on Sept 13.

As of 6 pm of Sept 13, Jiaxing had dispatched 45,424 government officials to identify and clear 3,355 potential dangers.

A total of 114,172 local residents had been transferred to safer places, 244 fishing ships had returned to the port, 2,165 underground parking lots and other underground spaces had implemented measures to prevent flooding, while classes in all 741 kindergartens, primary, and high schools, 130 passenger traffic lines, as well as 113 dangerous chemical enterprises had been suspended.

As of 4 pm of Sept 13, Jiaxing has drained 159 million square meters of water and had 1,225 shelters in place.

At 5 am on Sept 14, the center of Chanthu moved to waters 180 kilometers off southeastern Zhoushan at a latitude of 31.1 degrees north and a longitude of 123.6 degrees east. It packed a gale of 42 meters per second, according to the Zhejiang provincial meteorological observatory.

Moving northwestward at a speed of five to 10 km per hour, Chanthu will linger at waters near the mouth of the Yangtze River on Tuesday and Wednesday before moving northeastward and weakening on Wednesday night.
